Starting New

Postby cous13 on Tue Mar 02, 2010 8:53 am

I am at the time of this post, ready to start schooling the first of the month (apr) and I was wondering if the 20 week school is really going to help me get a job. They claim 99.9% placement. The economy is bad, I would have no experience, but this school gives me certification as a CDL Class A driver. Baker College in Flint Michigan is the school. Any thoughts or comments for me? I am prepared to be away from home, and i realize that I am starting over in a new career other than that, any input would be appreciated.

Twenty weeks is good.
By the time you are done you should be well ahead of the 3 week CDL mill students.
Do you have any idea of what companies they place their students with?
That is probably the most important question.

Once you know what company/companies you may work for, then you can be given the pros and cons of working for them.

I am hoping to hear something in the next day or two as to companies and hiring practices...it is all new to me and I am not really sure of the most important questions to ask.

Okay, well let's see (I haven't done this in a while).
Some good questions to ask the school would be:

Companies they place students with (the one we already went through)?

Will the company they place you with pay back your student loans (if you have any) or reimburse you for school (if you paid out of pocket)?

If things don't work out with the company you go to, will they help you in the future with getting another job? For how long?

If you need a refresher course in the future, do they offer them, what is the cost, and for how long are you entitled to come back for a refresher?

That's all I can think of right now.
Like I said earlier though, once you know what company/companies they place their students in, then you can get feedback on which are the better companies to go to and which to stay away from.

The first company you work for is probably the most important thing in a truck driver's career.
It sets the stage for how you will view the industry for the rest of your career.

I will keep these in mind and wait to hear from them. I do appreciate your input and hope to talk with you in the near future.
