Roehl Makes Driver Success a Company Value

Business experts advise that every company must have a reason for being. At Roehl Transport, one of those reasons is to help drivers succeed, according to company president Rick Roehl. “Driver success is one of a half-dozen core values that define and shape our company,” Rick Roehl said.

Identifying driver success as a company value is a significant departure from carriers that claim to “treat drivers right” but haven’t integrated the concept throughout the organization. As a company value, the commitment to do what it takes to make drivers successful is automatically part of every employee’s actions and decisions. “It’s basic to everything we do, rather than just an after-thought by a few people,” Rick Roehl explained.

The benefit drivers receive when their success is a company value is tangible and significant. Since the company defined safety as a company value two years ago, the impact on safety stats has been dramatic. “The same thing is happening with driver success and satisfaction,” explained Greg Koepel, Roehl’s vice president of workforce development. As was the case with safety, driver satisfaction at Roehl is already among the best in the industry. Improvement in these areas is increasing the company’s lead, Koepel added.

Koepel said drivers themselves have a large role in their success. “They have to work to Roehl’s proven standards and optimize the various tools the company provides. But every driver also knows that everyone else in the company is doing whatever they can to support and enhance that success — from the janitor who cleans the driver rooms, to the maintenance staff that keeps the trucks in top condition, to dispatch, sales and management. Every decision and response is considered in light of how it will add to the driver’s success. That positive driver support is based on a real understanding of the job and empathy with the men and women who do it,” according to Koepel.

“Being an over-the-road driver is a tough job. I know because my dad did it, I did it and I still haul some loads,” Rick Roehl said. “But with the right company behind you, it can also provides people a great deal of career success. Our values demand that we provide the pay; home time; equipment freight and operational resources; and family support to make that happen.”
