No. 50 Barr-Nunn Fusion Hauls it to 11th place finish
O’Quinn Jr. gets best finish of the year at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. (March 25, 2006)- After a rainy day on Friday kept the NASCAR Busch series cars from their scheduled practices, Saturday came with the hopes of avoiding the weather and getting the Sharpie Mini 300 at the Bristol Motor Speedway in. Qualifying was snowed out and the field was set by points, putting O’Quinn Jr. in the 26th starting position.

Fortunately, the race began on time despite the earlier snow shower that cancelled the qualifying session. O’Quinn Jr. was fighting an ill handling racecar, and running in the 30th position when the third caution of the day flew for teammate Todd Kluever and heavy snowfall. NASCAR red flagged the race, and as the snow accumulated on pit road, many of the drivers and crewmen began throwing snowballs at each other and the fans in the backstretch grandstands. After the snow ceased, the sun came out again and NASCAR put the dryers out on the track. The red-flag lasted 1 hour and 20 minutes before the race would be restarted.

O’Quinn Jr. made his first pit stop of the day after the fourth caution on lap 62. He brought the No. 50 Barr-Nunn Ford Fusion in for two tires and adjustments to improve the car’s ill-handling condition. He would restart in the 29th position, and start gaining positions after his third pit stop of the day on lap 116. From lap 119 to the end of the race, O’Quinn Jr. would continually gain positions on the racetrack. At lap 178, he had worked his way all the way up to the 10th position. On lap 190, he fell back to the 15th position after being passed by some of the lead lap cars who were on a different pit strategy and had fresher tires than he did.

Before the end of the race, O’Quinn Jr. would gain four of those spots back for an impressive 11th place finish at his hometown race track. It was the best finish of the year for the No. 50 team and O’Quinn Jr. was happy with the results.

“We thought it might be a bad day at the start of it, but after the snow showers came we made some adjustments and we were real good from then on,” said O’Quinn Jr. after the race. “We had good pit stops, we made the right calls [on pit road], we didn’t tear anything up, and it was just a really good day. We come out of here with our best finish of the year, it was a good points day for us, and it will be a big morale booster going into Texas.”

The NASCAR Busch series gets the weekend off next weekend before they head to the Texas Motor Speedway April 8.
